If you’ve cruised my site you’ll know that I believe Amoena really do create fabulous post surgical bras. Specifically for those who’ve endured a mastecomy and are looking for a front closure mastectomy bra with pockets. A reason I rate the Amoena ester post surgical bra highly!
It’s worth noting, I recently did a comprehensive review of some ‘Top Rated Front Closure Mastectomy Bras for Comfort’, the ester bra was excluded from this article because my order hadn’t arrived in time It could easily have been added to this list of my “top rated” styles.
Design Features of the Amoena Ester Post Surgical Bra
- Traditional Hook and Eye Front Closure System (7-9 hooks depending on size)
- Light breathable fabric across the back
- Wide soft straps for comfort
- Adjustable strap length
- Pocketed Bra
- Somewhat athletic design asthetic
One of the things that really sets the Amoena Ester apart is it’s ultra breathable synthetic fabric across the back and sides.
This material also allows for swelling immediately post surgery as it has just the right amount of stretch to it.

Things I loved about this front closure mastectomy bra with pockets...
- The cups are super light molded foam ensuring a smooth look under clothing. They aren't a heavy structured cup. Just the right amount of coverage.
- The lightweight breathable back material doesn't squeeze or cause discomfort after long periods.
- The Sporty look bra is perfect for post op days adorned in sweats and loungewear.
- I felt like I was wearing a supportive bra without feeling too restricted or constricted.
- The soft inner of the garment is certainly suitable for use when coming our of hospital post surgical compression.
Fitting Tips for the Amoena Ester Post Sugical Front Closure Bra
I found this style to fit just a tad snug around the ribcage. If you are trying to decide between a 36 and a 38 go the 38. If you are a straight 36 and like your bras snug then you can stick with the 36. If you are a straight 36 and don’t like too much firmness around your ribcage then consider the 38.
If you are having a bilateral mastectomy you will probably be best in the A cup size immediately after surgery. This will still allow for a prosthesis later down the track.
I always recommend having at least 2 post surgical bras for when you return home. 3 is actually ideal… 1 to wash, 1 to wear and 1 to spare. If you are buying multiple you could consider two sizes. The bigger size for immediately post op eg a 38 and a smaller size for 10 – 14 days down track eg a 36.

Things to be aware of with this bra
Like with a lot of front closure bras the Wacoal Perfect Primer can’t be pulled in to a firmer hook setting once it’s stretched. So you’ll want to make sure it’s appropriately snug when it’s new to allow from stretch in the garment with wear. Washing and wear will result in some give in the garment within a few weeks.
Also, as per my fitting notes above. Some people do find this style to fit small around the ribcage so take this in to consideration with your size selection.

My review wrap up
As a Bra Fitter I am a stickler for quality fabrics that are going to last a long time. This is where the consumer really gets their value. And from the moment I unwrapped this bra the quality was very apparent.
I really think this is a “crowd pleaser” style bra. A Bra that most women will appreciate in some which way or another.
It’s an easy bra to slot in to everyday wear while still ticking the boxes for post surgery. Add to that it’s pocketed that will allow for ease of use when/if transitioning to breast forms or breath prosthesis.
